Aafreen Rehman, a 28-year-old Muslim woman from Jaipur, has knocked on the doors of Supreme Court after her husband recently divorced her by writing ‘talaq’ three times in a letter and sending her through speed post.
She has become the second Muslim woman after Shayara Bano of Uttrakhand to challenge the ‘triple talaq’ system in the apex court.

Rehman, who is an MBA graduate and works with a private firm, says she was stunned on how three words scribbled on a piece of paper turned her life upside down.
“I was angry at the sheer injustice. He never once spoke to me about it. He cut off all contacts. When my sister and I went to Indore to meet them, their house was locked,” Aafreen told Hindustan Times.
As per the report, Aafreen and Ashar Warsi got married through a matrimonial site in 2014. A few months into the marriage, her in-laws began tormenting her for dowry.
Ashar would beat her up for months. But the divorce via speed post in January this year really came as a shock to Aafreen when she was at her maternal home. The letter from her husband also questioned her character and accused her of being greedy for his property.
“He cut off all contact. He changed his number, unfriended me on Facebook, blocked me on WhatsApp. When my sister and I went to Indore to meet them, their house was locked,” Aafreen told HT.
The triple talaq, under which Muslim men can divorce their wives by using the word talaq thrice, is one of the most controversial practices of the Muslim personal law.
According to ANI reports, the Centre has recommended a ban on the practice of oral, unilateral and triple talaq.
