Normally it uses motorcycles to make deliveries, but e-commerce giant Amazon India is now trying a unique experiment. They’re going to deliver products by cycle!

Ok so not all their deliveries will be done by cycle, but if your location is up to 5 kilometres from the fulfillment centre then it could be delivered by cycle, reports Economic Times

While the company says it is being done to reduce air pollution, delivery agents on cycles cost less than those riding motorcycles.

The report said that delivery agents, who would carry bags weighing under 8 kg, would earn about 7,500 to 8,000 per month. This is almost half in comparison to motorcycle delivery agents who earn about 14,000 per month with incentives.

The scheme has been experimented with in Mumbai and will be rolled out in other cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.

The cycle delivery service is expected to also be faster in congested areas of the city. However, while it does reduce pollution to some extent it remains to be seen if the incentive is attractive enough for delivery agents, especially when it is hotter.
