Things took a surprising turn when a 37-year-old rape survivor was arrested for falsely accusing cops of assaulting her.

The Rampur Police on Thursday arrested the woman who accused the Investigation Officer (IO) and sub-inspector at Rampur’s Ganj police station of asking for sexual favours. Her companion was also arrested.

What is the woman’s claim?

According to TOI, the survivor said that when she went to the police station to inform that her rapists were roaming free, the IO asked her to have sex with her. She alleged that after her refusal, the sub-inspector, Jai Prakash Singh went ahead and filed a closure report.

“Whenever I approached SI Jai Prakash Singh seeking arrest of the accused, he would say he first wanted to have sex with me. He even called up on my mobile phone and invited me to visit him in his room alone. When I turned him down, he filed a closure report in the case a fortnight ago,” she told TOI.

She claimed that the officer told her he would arrest the accused only after she fulfills his desire.

The woman, however, as a testimony, recorded the conversation and handed over a CD to the SP on Wednesday who then ordered an inquiry.

What did the inquiry reveal?

“Prima facie, the voice in the audio clip doesn’t match with that of the SI. But will investigate her charges thoroughly,” Rampur superintendent of police Vipin Tada told TOI.

However, it was later discovered that the accusations were false and the woman was subsequently arrested.

In a tweet to HuffPost India, UP police confirmed the reports:

The background of the case:

The woman was gang-raped by two men on the night of February 12, this year while returning to Rampur from her relative’s place. Both the accused, one of whom was known to the woman, carried out the heinous act at gun-point at her house after offering her a lift.

A case, which the police initially refused to file, was registered against the perpetrators a week later after the woman approached a local court.

Two persons, namely Ameer Ahmad, 55 and Sattar Ahmad, 45 were identified and booked under IPC’s sections 376 (D) (gang rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation), TOI reported.

However, as the accused were on loose, the survivor urged the police to arrest them as she feared for her life.
