In the ‘90s, Sennheiser asked its engineers to make the best headphones ever and they came up with 300 sets of the legendary Orpheus HE90 , each pair of which sold for a princely sum $16,000.

Those headphones were designed with just one question in mind: what sort of headphones could you make if money wasn’t an issue?

Today, if you can even find someone willing to part with one, an Orpheus HE90 could set you back close to $50,000. Of course, if you have that kind of change to spare, the company just made things a little simpler for you. Sennheiser — who turn 70 this year — have now gone back to the drawing board and created an ever better-sounding successor to those luxurious cans — but they’ll set you back by approximately $55,000. Yes, you can whistle. But if you are a very rich audiophile, then this might win you bragging rights for a long time to come.
