The Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry is so storied that the comparisons have gone way past just the number of goals they score. The two are also locked in a battle to be the ‘better’ person — and that involves their charity work, the way they treat fans who approach them on-pitch and how they treat their teammates.
While Ronaldo’s been donning beggar makeup to surprise kids and writing letters to judges to let go off streakers, he’s been blamed for being too selfish in front of goal – often whining when other players don’t pass it to him.
None of that fits to Messi though. The Argentine was one goal away from recording 300 La Liga strikes when Barcelona were awarded a penalty against Celta Vigo. His teammate Luis Suarez was on a hat-trick. Surely Messi was going to reach his milestone with the penalty?
Turns out he had other ideas. The reigning world player of the year did the unthinkable by passing the ball to Suarez from the penalty spot, ensuring the Uruguayan gets his hat-trick and making sure the whole world knows what a selfless player he is.
True greatness is not about goals, is it?
Over to you Ronaldo.
