What initially seemed liked a heartwarming tale about love and hope has turned out to be a sickening trail of events in the story of Lin Yingying. This 22-year-old Chinese woman had been in a coma for the last eight months, and only woke up recently. Throughout the worrisome eight months, her boyfriend Liu Fenghe sat by her bedside, spent nights on end and even paid 200,000 yuan ($30,700) on her hospital bills, leading everyone to believe that he was a genuinely good person.

Upon waking up from her coma however, Lin revealed that it was Liu, her ‘loving’ boyfriend, who had struck her in the head so viciously all those months ago that she was put into a coma.

According to her, this wasn’t the first time that he had hit her either, and he had frequently beaten her in the past. He even forbade her parents from visiting her after the attack, but they were able to take her back with them in May 2015.

The couple used to run a bakery in Liaoning, China, and the savage beating took place when Liu lost his temper after Lin apparently burnt some bread. He repeatedly started beating her after this accident.

Her family begged her to go public with the knowledge, but she kept the news secret out of fear of Liu. After waking up from the coma however, her father told her, “You have died once, what more are you afraid of? It’s time to confront reality.”

Following this, Lin went public with the news, and reported Liu to the authorities. Apparently, it was a miracle that she even woke up. It’s reassuring that her family persuaded her to reveal the real situation however, and gives hope that other cases of domestic violence will not go unreported.
