Here’s some good news for train travellers. The North Western Railways (NWR) will soon be installing Wi-Fi hotspots in some selected trains, allowing passengers to download movies and games.

The pilot project has been introduced on the Bikaner-Sarai Rohilla train by installing restricted router in some of the coaches, and the facility will be extended to other trains after approval, reports The Times of India.

The trial of the service will be extended to nine other railway stations in various divisions of NWR, the report adds. Tarun Jain, chief public relations officer of NWR told TOI,

“We have installed routers to give restricted Wi-Fi access to the passengers travelling in Bikaner-Delhi Sarai Rohilla train. Through this they can freely download an App called ‘Press Play’. The App will enable them to download games, music and movies of their choice for free.”

The facility can be used only after downloading the app, which will be activated only when a passenger boards the train. The railways is planning to next provide the facility on the Jaipur-Delhi Sarai Rohilla double-decker train. However, for its permanent functioning, NWR will require clearance from Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow.

This provision has come just days after the railways planned to launch all new ‘smart coaches’ that will have state-of-the-art facilities, including Wi-Fi and GPS-based wake-up alarm, which is likely to be announced during the budget.
