There have been times in history where thousands have had to suffer due to the whims or negligence of a few. People have died due to no fault of their own and unfortunately many others still continue to suffer injudiciously. Here are a list of places that have become infamous for having a really dark history and being the worst places to be in as a human being. The tale of gruesomeness is bone-chilling.

1. Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Nazi Germany

This was one of the most ruthless Nazi concentration camps. It went on to become a major site of the Nazi Final Solution to the Jewish Question. The Jews were gassed and killed en masse with pesticide Zyklon B. At least 1.1 million people were killed. Many of those not killed in the gas chambers died of starvation, forced labor, infectious diseases, individual executions, and medical experiments.

2. Unit 731, Pingfang District, China

It was a Japanese R&D unit during the Second Sino-Japanese war. Up to 2,50,000 people were subject to lethal human experimentation at this lab. Vivisections were performed on prisoners after infecting them with various diseases and without anesthesia. Forced pregnancy, syphillis and frostbite testing were carried on regularly.

3. Hoeryong Concentration Camp, North Korea

It is a prison camp that is completely isolated from the rest of the world. Routine torture, forced labour and human experiments are some of the issues this prison is notorious for. The prisoners are reduced to walking skeletons, dwarfs, and cripples in rags. Guards have the leeway of killing any prisoner at will. Also known as Camp-22.

4. S-21 Prison, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

S-21 prison was one of the sites used by the Khmer Rouge regime. There was a secret prison used for torturing, interrogating, and depriving those who were accused of illegal activities and accused of being traitors. They were sometimes forced to eat human faeces and drink human urine. Blood was pumped out of their body to see how long they could survive.

5. Solovki Prison Camp, Solovetsky Islands

This prison camp was called the ‘mother of the GULAG‘. It was a forced labour camp for socialist opponents of Soviet Russia’s new Bolshevik regime. The prisoners received food according to work output. Guards could torture and cripple a man or kill them by throwing them down a long stairway. Prisoners were subjected to swarms of summer mosquitoes for days in this desolated island.

6. Poison Laboratory Of The Soviet Secret Services, Russia

A number of deadly poisons such as mustard gas, ricin, digitoxin, curare, cyanide, were tested on prisoners from the Gulags. The Russians wanted to find a colourless, odourless chemical that could not be detected post-mortem. The final result C-2 made subjects change physically, become shorter, weaken quickly, become calm and silent, and they died within fifteen minutes.

7. Guantanamo Bay, USA

They have a history of torture through waterboarding and other methods.

It is a United States military prison where inmates are detained indefinitely without trial. Prisoners have almost no hope of freedom during their lifetime. The prisoners are tortured and held in cold, confined cells. Obama government tried to shut the facility down but couldn’t.

8. Carandiru Prison, Brazil

This overcrowded prison witnessed a major massacre of its inmates.

The prison housed 8000 inmates without having the resources to do so. Malnutrition and life-threatening diseases were commonplace. Riots spread across the prison, police did not want to negotiate and they sent military police which stormed the prison and massacred the inmates. It is one of the worst human rights violation in Brazil.

9. Tadmor Military Prison, Syria

Conditions here are desolate and summary executions are routine.

In 1980, Tadmor was the site of a massacre as a reaction of the assassination attempt on President Hafiz al-Asad. The prison was known for harsh conditions, extreme human rights violations and summary execution. The prison had no domestic facilities or means of entertainment, a completely closed place.

10. Black Dolphin Prison, Russia

Conditions here are so extreme that prisoners routinely self mutilate in protest.

Known as Russia’s toughest prison, this high security prison on the Kazakhstan border houses the country’s most brutal criminals, including serial killers, cannibals, and terrorists. The prison has been compared to the historical Gulag sytem. Inmates are known to self-mutilate as a form of protest. Medical attention is delayed to HIV/AIDS patients.

11. National Stadium of Chile, Chile

The stadium served as a makeshift prison camp where as many as 20,000 men and women suffered at the hands of a military junta, and became a synonym for the cruelty of Pinochet regime. Hostages were subjected to routine beatings, including being thrown against the concrete walls beneath the stands, at times headfirst, also to massive amounts of electricity over their entire body and burned with cigarettes.

12. Camp Sumter, USA

The conditions here were so bad that people had to drink diseased and fecal water.

The camp was over-populated leaving each inmate with hardly six square feet of living space. The conditions were absolutely abysmal due to lack of resources. Men were reduced to drinking creek water filled with the fecal matter of diseased and dying men, sickening them with scurvy, dysentery, and diarrhoea.
