Love is not skin deep. And the story of Saroj Sahoo and Pramodini Roul is the best example of unadulterated pure love.

Pramodini was just 15 when a paramilitary soldier proposed her for marriage. She turned him down and the scorned lover doused her face with acid. Pramodini, from Odisha, went blind in both eyes and suffered horrific burns.

Spending most of her time in bed or in the hospital, Pramodini hadn’t ever imagined that love would ever knock on her door.

During her facial reconstructive surgeries, doctors used skin from her legs for grafting. She was once discharged without proper treatment of her leg which led to an infection. While receiving treatment in the hospital for her pus-filled infected leg, she met Saroj Kumar Sahoo, who was a friend of her nurse.

Doctors told her mother that Pramodini, lovingly called Rani, would need at least 4 years before she can walk again. When Saroj saw Rani’s mother weeping uncontrollably, he comforted her and offered help.

While the duo didn’t speak initially, Saroj began visiting the hospital regularly and began encouraging her.

Eventually, he quit his job and started devoting around 8 hours looking after Rani, now 25 years old. As the two began spending time together, love bloomed. Given her situation, Rani was hesitant to get into a relationship.

But when Saroj proposed her for marriage, she knew that there’s no place she’d rather be than with him.

The two have been living together for a year in New Delhi and are now planning to get married. Rani told Daily Mail:

Saroj really treats me like a queen. He loves me like the way I am. He always encourages me to live life happily. He has become a part of me. I would not have been able to see the world today if I did not have him in my life.

The couple is now waiting for a few more reconstructive surgeries before they tie the knot. While the judicial system failed to give her justice as the culprit roams free, Rani is looking forward to a new chapter with a bright future with her lover.

Here’s hoping she not only lives a happy life but also gets the justice she deserves.
