It’s a given norm today that dads are overprotective of their daughters and keep a tab on who they are dating. There is a host of jokes on social media about how dads are constantly ready to pin their princess’ lover down. However, writer J. Warren Welch who is fathering 5 daughters doesn’t find these jokes funny at all.
He thinks that daughters shouldn’t be dainty darlings who needs a creepy possessive dad to protect them. They should be perfectly capable of helping themselves on their own.
He knows his daughters deserve to be treated with respect and they can very well handle people who don’t on their own. He shared his thoughts in a Facebook post last week as Rules for dating my daughters.
The post has become a rage on social media as several people are supporting Welch’s stand. Welch told TODAY parents:
“I understand the urge to protect your daughters, I get that. But the kind of posturing by fathers of daughters I was specifically responding to had nothing to do with that ‘protective instinct’ and everything to do with asserting their dominance over women and reinforcing a belief that women need men to take care of them.”
This is a strong message to all the parents out there that they should raise their daughters to be independent and strong on their own, rather than relying on their father or brother to come save them. Girls are not meant to be princesses or dainty darlings, they are the strongest warriors you will ever come across.
We need more dads like Welch!
