MS Dhoni has stepped down as captain of the ODI and Twenty20 teams.

The BCCI announced in a tweet that the World Cup 2011 winner had made the decision, paving the way for Test skipper Virat Kohli to take over.

Dhoni will still be available for the selection for the ODI and T20I series against England scheduled to begin on January 15.

BCCI’s CEO Rahul Johri thanked Dhoni, saying:

“On the behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats. Under his leadership, Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket.”

Dhoni has been captain of India in 199 ODIs and 72 T20Is.
