23-year-old Neerja Bhanot was an air hostess from Mumbai who became a celebrated figure for the courage she showed in 1986. She was on Pan Am Flight 73 on 5 September 1986 when it was hijacked by Palestinian terrorists in Karachi. Despite having the option to escape first, she decided to help the other passengers. She was shot and killed in a hail of bullets as she was shielding three children.
With the renewed interest in her life thanks to an upcoming biopic starring Sonam Kapoor, new bits of information about her life and her last moments are also coming to light. One of the most heart-wrenching and tragic of these is the regular announcement she made on the flight after she boarded. This is a real recording, released by Fox Star Hindi.
