They hold you up when you can’t support yourself. They make you feel good when everything else seems to be going wrong. And they never give up on you. Except of course when the wire of your ₹2000 bra sticks out and starts poking your breasts.

Despite that, it is safe to say that your relationship with lingerie is a precious one. All it needs is a little care every once in a while. And if you take care of it well, it will stay with you for a very long time.

Maintaining your expensive bras and underwear requires no special hack; just some proper care and commitment would do. Here are a few things to keep in mind to make your lingerie last longer.

1. Do not wash your bras after every wear

As gross as it might sound, you do not necessarily have to wash your bras after every wear. Underwear, yes. But not bras. They can survive a day without a wash. After a single wear, you can hang them out to dry in the sun and they’ll be as good as new.

2. Hand wash as much as possible

Now, don’t be lazy to do it. Wash it in lukewarm or cold water so that it retains its elasticity. And use only a mild soap or liquid detergent.

3. Machine wash with a lingerie bag only

If hand wash sounds like a tedious task to you, just put it in the machine. But keep a few points in mind.

  • Wash them separately, not with the other clothes. Wash the light-coloured ones separately.
  • Use a light detergent only.
  • Hook up your bras so they don’t get entangled.
  • Use a lingerie bag for a better and safer wash.
  • Do not machine dry them.

4. Make sure you don’t wring them after wash

Wringing makes the threads weak, so avoid that. The best way to dry your lingerie is to place it between two towels and press them so that the extra water is soaked up by the towels.

5. Always hang them to dry

Do not fold them and dry. Do not dry them with an iron or with a blower. It will ruin your bra and reduce its shelf life.

6. Do not place your bras inside out into each other

While this is how most women keep their bras, it is not one of the best ways to sort them out. As it turns out, turning them inside out distorts the shape of the cup. So spread them out and keep them lined back to back.
